If you’re already tired thinking about the pile of laundry you have to do, the homework that isn’t completed or the stack of dishes next to the sink, consider how nice it would be to take a long nap on a family vacation. Getting away with your spouse and kids is something that will not only bond you together, but will give you a chance to relax and unwind in a new and exciting environment. Remember, despite the fun of a vacation, it’s vital that you plan ahead and prepare as much as possible for the trip before you leave.
1. Let your kids watch television
Television can be your best friend when you’re traveling with small children, but sometimes it just doesn’t cut it. If you need a way to preoccupy them and happen to have an iPad, child-proof it and load it with some apps that will retain his/her interest for the trip. With so many interactive games, books, etc. at your fingertips, this device can be a lifesaver. If you are traveling internationally, try and bring a portable DVD player. Not only will the local televisions likely be in a foreign language, but the DVD compatability changes from country to country.
2. Pack appropriately
Leave kids swimsuits packed on top, so when you finally arrive at your destination your family can be pool side ASAP. Don’t waste time trying to sort through bags. Packing your kids’ swimsuits on top saves you time and energy. Let your kids know ahead of time that when you arrive, you’ll be heading for the water.
3. Don’t forget the important stuff
Don’t forget the parent essentials: zip lock bags (in a variety of sizes), first aid kit, a sippy cup or two and maybe a car travel bag with a few fresh shirts. You never know the spills that could happen on a plane, car trip or train ride. Plus you want the kids and you feeling refreshed when you arrive at your destination!
4. Choose wisely
Many of us are tempted to choose the cheapest lodging possible when planning a trip, hoping to use the funds elsewhere. But what if you could stay where you wanted and not break the bank? Utilizing the Internet is your best friend when it comes to finding the best hotels with the lowest price tags. When planning my family’s trip to Hawaii, I was able to find the best family friendly resort by reading other family reviews of Honolulu’s top hotels online. Make sure to also be aware of additional charges associated with booking a hotel, as the hotel that appears cheapest may actually be more expensive after the extra charges.
5. Relax
Remember to stay calm and relax as much as possible. Even if you encounter a few mishaps along the way, try to enjoy the journey. Your family wants to spend time with you. Even if the vacation isn’t 100% perfect, it’ll be a perfect memory of time you got to spend as a family.

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Mar. 21, 2013 – As the old saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” But this year, Florida residents may be getting more than they bargained for with those springtime raindrops. A particularly wet 2012 summer resulted in flooding throughout the state and unleashed higher-than-normal numbers of pestiferous mosquitoes, including the recently-publicized “Gallinipper” – a half inch-long, particularly aggressive variety.
While most mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water, floodwater mosquitoes lay eggs on moist ground, near ponds, streams and other areas that flood when heavy rains come. The eggs can remain dormant for years but will hatch when flooded. So, as springtime rains soak Florida, the eggs laid in 2012 will soon begin to hatch.
Florida is no stranger to mosquitoes; of the approximately 176 species found in the United States, 80 call the state home. Scientists increasingly warn of the potential danger of these warm weather pests. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2012 Florida reported 65 cases of West Nile disease and four cases of dengue fever, both of which may be carried by mosquitoes.
Terminix, the nation’s largest pest control provider, offers a line of all-natural mosquito misting solutions designed to keep families bite-free outdoors. The portable misters are easy-to-use and proven to repel up to 95% of mosquitoes from areas 300 to 2,000 square feet.
